The original sleeves have been replaced with what look like fine-woven, thin fabric pullover sleeves- sleeves from a long-sleeve T might do. A strip of fabric with five buttonholes has been attached to the leading edge on the right side of the collar (as you look at it). Five buttons have been attached in a vertical row to the forward edge of the collar (left side as you face it). To make Rita’s jacket, the front zip of the German jacket has been moved down, so the top of the zip sits at the base of the collar, not the top, and the zip then reaches down to the hem of the jacket. The original jackets are usually green so you have the problem of colouring them black (they’re 100% synthetic). Do an image search for “German quilted jacket liner” and it’s not too difficult to find some for sale, often effectively new (stored for 20+ years!) There are some variations- Rita’s jacket has a zig-zag (NOT the less-common diamond) quilt pattern. The jacket is DEFINITELY based on a (West) German army jacket liner from the 1980’s /90’s. Probably not very practical on a lady’s tank-top, but it looks right for Rita- and that’s the point. Probably not very comfortable against skin!) The horizontal straps across the garment echo many current military jackets and packs, particularly MOLLE designs, where they are called Pouch Attachment Ladder Systems- you can attach or remove pouches or pockets as needed. The shoulder straps look like, and might actually be, webbing straps (the suspenders soldiers wear to help support load-bearing belts festooned with pouches. It appears to be a black bandeau top (or maybe sports bra) covered with a longer mesh fabric wraparound, onto which horizontal black fabric straps have been sewn. Rita’s ‘tank top’ is probably a studio dressmaker’s one-off. For people who want to try a very similar look (cosplayers ?) I’ve a few thoughts. I think you’re right, the studio (and Emily) pull off exactly the right look. “Edge of Tomorrow – Rita Vrataski” (Jan 02, 2018).
