![]() He imagined the products of nihilism as passionless, shallow, blandly hedonistic, self-absorbed members of a human herd. Even Nietzsche, who arguably thought that nihilism was a necessary step between old “human” values (that should be abandoned) and the new values of the post-human Overman, found the culture of nihilism repulsive. I will argue that nihilism gets a bad rap. Cornel West and some other leftists see capitalism’s undermining of democracy as the cause of a contemporary culture of nihilism. Some romantics see science and technology as corrosive of true values and thus as a source of nihilism. Religious and cultural traditionalists see nihilism as the inevitable result of rationalist questioning of orthodox beliefs – including how natural sciences allegedly undercuts faith traditions. Different voices discern the roots of this purported nihilism as grounded in very different soil. Various factions today accuse their opponents of holding nihilistic attitudes toward culture, society, and/or politics. For example, while the nihilist states that nothing is of value, the skeptic either denies that one can know what a value (such as justice) is, or questions whether that particular value exists at all. While skepticism about something can sometimes lead to a nihilistic attitude toward it, skepticism and nihilism are essentially distinct. Nihilism is often associated with skepticism, but neither can be reduced to the other. Perhaps the two most radical subcategories are epistemic nihilism, which claims there is no distinction between knowledge and ignorance, and logical nihilism, which does not recognize truth or falsehood. Logical nihilism argues that claims of truth or of falsity are meaningless. Political nihilism implies that competing political claims are all unjustifiable. Aesthetic nihilism says that there is no such thing as artistic merit (or the lack thereof). It can be roughly subdivided into four categories: Moral nihilism denies that anything can legitimately be said to be moral or immoral. Nihilism can be defined as the doctrine that nothing is of value and nothing should be affirmed. Is there a need to resist or oppose nihilism in any (or all) of its forms? to allow for socializing.
